BMI Calculator for Adults

Body mass index (BMI) compares your weight to your height. Enter your numbers in US or metric units to see your BMI, the adult category it falls in, and a plain explanation of what that does and does not mean. For adults who are not pregnant.

Estimates are educational. They do not diagnose any condition and do not establish eligibility for any medication. A licensed provider decides what is appropriate for you. Explore programs.

What BMI measures

BMI estimates whether weight is in proportion to height. Public health agencies use it because it is quick and correlates with body fat across large populations. It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.

How it works

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

Pounds and inches are converted first (1 lb = 0.4536 kg, 1 in = 2.54 cm). Adult categories follow the CDC and WHO cutoffs: underweight below 18.5, healthy weight 18.5 to 24.9, overweight 25.0 to 29.9, and obesity 30.0 or higher (class 1, 2 and 3).

Limitations

  • BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat.
  • It does not show where fat is stored.
  • Risk at a given BMI varies by age, sex and ancestry.
  • It is not valid for children, teens or during pregnancy.
  • BMI alone never decides whether a treatment is appropriate. A licensed provider looks at your full history.

FAQ

BMI Calculator questions

More in the Help Center, or send us a question.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not very. Muscle is dense, so a muscular person can have a BMI in the overweight range with low body fat. BMI works best as a population screening number.

What BMI is considered healthy for adults?

The CDC and WHO define a healthy weight range as a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.

Can I use this calculator for my child?

No. Children and teens are assessed with age- and sex-specific percentiles; the CDC offers a separate calculator for them.

Why is my BMI the same in pounds and kilograms?

The calculator converts your entries to kilograms and meters before applying the formula, so the result is the same in either unit system.
